Heat treating is a process where the physical or chemical properties of a material will change due to heat treatment techniques. Components are then toughened and strengthened after heat treating.

Integral quench hardening is a mechanical process in which machine components undergo a uniform quenching, ensuring low carbon steel is tougher.

During vacuum hardening, material is heated in the absence of oxygen via convection of an inert gas (N₂) and / or heat radiation under pressure.

Carburizing is a heat treatment process in which iron or steel absorbs carbon while the metal is heated in the presence of a carbon-bearing material, such as charcoal or carbon monoxide.

Flame hardening is a common surface hardening method. Metal surfaces, such as steel, are heated with a high-temperature flame and then quenched. This results in a hard surface that is more corrosion and wear resistant.
